Synopsis[]
Catherine learns of a painful betrayal close to home, and Faisal comes under increasing pressure from all sides.
Plot[]
The episode begins immediately after where the previous one finished: just after Mike Taylor reveals to Catherine Cawood that he's had news about Ryan Cawood visiting Tommy Lee Royce in prison. The pair go to Mike's office, and he tells her that her sister, Clare Cartwright, is the person facilitating Ryan's visits - along with her partner Neil Ackroyd. He also tells her that there had been four visits within the previous year, and a fifth visit had been arranged.
Catherine struggles to come to terms with the news. She doesn't understand why Clare would do that, or how Ryan and Tommy had been in touch. Mike asks if there's anything he can do, and Catherine asks if she can take the day of the arranged visit off work.
After the opening credits, we see Ryan and Cesco. The boys have just finished school and have gone to get their bikes, but they find that someone had put an extra bike locks on them - making them immobile. Shortly after realising this, Mr Hepworth appears and tells them that they are both in detention for taunting him in the car park the day before. Cesco complains about what's happened to their bikes, but Mr Hepworth doesn't seem particularly surprised - implying that he added the extra locks. Ryan complains about the detention, as he was not the one that shouted in the car park. The situation escalates, and Ryan and Mr Hepworth have a big argument. Ryan is kicked off the school football team as a result.
Ryan walks home house, and becomes extremely angry. He throws his bag at the door, and then proceeds to ransack his bedroom. Clare is also there and is listening in from downstairs. She phones Neil, who is at work - but unable to come and help as they are short-staffed.
Elsewhere, Faisal Bhatti, troubled by his run in with Ivan Sertic and Matija Jankovic, is just arriving home. His wife - Anisha Bhatti - asks if he's free to go to her sister's house later in the week, as she's just had a £15,000 decking project finished, but Anisha says they'll go before Faisal can respond.
Later in the evening, Catherine is parked outside her house and speaking to her ex-husband - Richard Cawood - about Ryan's visits to Tommy. Richard asks if there's any possibility that it could be someone else using Clare and Neil's identities - but Catherine says that it would be too much of a coincidence that all of the visits happened while she was working. Richard recommends that Catherine asks Clare, but Catherine refuses. She says that she plans to observe, and follow them on Saturday and see if it's true for herself. Richard asks if Catherine would like to meet up the next day, and Catherine agrees.
In the house, Ryan has now calmed down and is sat with Clare. Catherine asks why Ryan isn't in bed, and Ryan says that he had been kicked off the football team. Catherine says that she already knew that, and also knew that he'd trashed his bedroom. Clare interjects to say that she's helped to clear the bedroom up, which Catherine chastises her for as she thinks it sends the wrong message. She then asks Ryan what had happened to get him kicked off the football team. Ryan's initial explanation is to call Mr Hepworth a "twat", but then goes on to explain that Cesco was the one taunting Mr Hepworth and not him. Troubled by her knowledge of Ryan visiting Tommy, she says that she cannot deal with it at that moment. She sends Ryan to bed and lets Clare walk home - rather than giving her a lift.
Clare texts Catherine to tell her that she got home safely. Catherine coldly replies with just the thumbs-up emoji. Ryan comes downstairs to get some water. He asks what he will do if he goes off to the Himalayas, and says he would like to go with her. He also says that he would like to get back on the football team, before going back to bed.
The next day, Joanna Hepworth goes to see Faisal at work. They go on a walk, and she tells him about her husband's behaviour towards her. She also says that her husband will pick on a boy at school to knock their confidence, and then pick them back up again. Fearing for her safety, she now wants to get away from him. She says that Faisal agreed to help her buy a flat when he first starting giving her diazepam (a conversation which he does not recall). She threatens to tell the police that he gave her the diazepam which was confiscated from her if he does not help her - further adding to Faisal's financial problems.
Elsewhere, Acting Sgt. Shafiq Shah and PC Ann Gallagher are conducting door-to-door enquiries, following a death of a nearby resident. Ann reveals that she is about to start a secondment to CID following a successful interview, before they head into a resident's flat. Catherine is also involved in these enquiries, and between talking to residents calls Richard. He asks how she was doing and if anything had been said about Ryan visiting Tommy. He also asks if she would still like to meet up, as he would like to discuss Darius Knezevic as part of an investigation he is doing into links between organised crime and local government. During the call, Catherine notices Alison Garrs unloading some furniture. She cuts the call short and heads off after her.
She catches up to Alison, who has just been released from prison. Catherine re-introduces herself, and offers to help with the furniture. Alison initially refuses, but soon lets Catherine help. Alison tells Catherine that she lost her farm, but a neighbour did look after her pickup truck. She is now living in a flat in the block where Catherine and her colleagues are conducting their enquiries. Alison notes that the flat is not in good condition; the windows open further than they should and there are no fire suppression systems.
Catherine then meets Richard in a café, where she is telling him about the poor state of the flats. She explains that, because government contracts are valuable, criminals will set up companies to put in bids. The companies then do the work cheaply, before closing down ahead of any inevitable problems. Catherine says that the Knezevics could be running such scams. Richard asks how the criminals win the contracts, which Catherine attributes to government corruption or the companies demonstrating good products during the bidding, but then replacing them with cheap alternatives later. She also says that Darius Knezevic running for local government is a way of hiding in plain sight. Richard asks if Catherine has heard rumours that Darius is linked to the murder of Gary Gackowski. She says that she's heard things, but it'll be impossible to prove. Catherine then stands up to leave but, before she goes, Richard asks about the death of the woman at the block of flats. Catherine tells him that the woman fell from a fourth floor window, and when response officers entered the flat they found boxes full of cash - amounting to tens of thousands. Catherine then gets a phone call from Ryan's headteacher, David Baines, who asks her to visit the school.
Meanwhile, Tommy is getting ready to serve food to other prisoners. On his way to the canteen, he encounters the prison chaplain who told the police that he confessed to the murder of Gary Gackowski. He intimidates the chaplain, and then proceeds on his way. In the canteen, he is serving chips and mashed potato to queuing prisoners. A fight breaks out in the queue. As the queuing prisoners fight, another prisoner who is serving food takes a small package from under the counter and puts it in his sock. A prison officer notices this, but does nothing. The prisoner then smiles to Tommy.
Elsewhere, Catherine is just arriving at the school. Walking through the car park, she stops at Rob Hepworth's car - observing that its tyres have been deflated and someone had drawn a penis in black marker on the back of the car. She is able to wipe off some of the marker, showing that it is not permanent damage. She then heads into the school. Ryan is sat outside the headteachers office, and is unhappy that Catherine has turned up in her police uniform. They head into the headteachers office, where David Baines and Rob Hepworth are waiting. Rob is very surprised to see Catherine again, and is startled when she asks how his wife is.
David says that Rob thinks that Ryan was the one who damaged his car. Catherine immediately questions Ryan, asking if he damaged the car or if he knew who did. She also asks him to show her his hands and empty his pockets. Catherine then questions Rob, starting by asking when the damage occurred and who had access to the car park. She also asks if there is any CCTV, to which David says that there isn't in that area. Catherine then asks why they believe Ryan damaged the car. Rob mentions that his suspicions were the result of the argument between him and Ryan the day before, and that he wasn't accusing Ryan of the damage. Catherine then interrupts to say that she thought he was accusing Ryan. David also says that he thought Rob was accusing Ryan. Catherine then begins to talk about writing a police report, but David quickly interjects to say that it won't be necessary to do so. Catherine then says that it's a good thing that they don't want a police report, because they'll need more evidence than the fact an argument happened the day before. David then attempts to clarify what the argument was about - saying that he believed it was an argument because of Ryan's use of unacceptable language. Catherine says that the incident doesn't add up to her, as she believed Ryan planned to apologise to Rob rather than damaging his car, so he could get back on the football team. She also says that the argument was because Ryan was taken off the team. Ryan then says that the argument was actually because he was blamed for something that Cesco said and admitted, and also that Rob chased both him and Cesco in his car. Rob denies chasing the boys in his car. David then suggests that the meeting should come to a close so the school can investigate further.
Leaving the office, Catherine asks if Ryan managed to get his bike back. He says that he did. She also says that meeting was weird, to which Ryan says that Rob is weird. Catherine goes on to say that David phoned her like they had caught him in the act. Ryan suggests that Rob damaged his own car to get him into trouble. He then tells Catherine explicitly that he didn't cause the damage. Catherine says that she knows he didn't, because she's seen the way he draws a penis when playing a game and it looked nothing like the drawing on the car.
Back at the prison, the prisoner who picked up the package earlier gives it to Tommy. Tommy then takes it back to his cell. He opens the package and finds that it contains a small mobile phone. The phone has received one text message, which reads RICOS NEWSAGENTS GR8 PRESENTS 4 RYAN. Having read the message, Tommy smiles.
Elsewhere, at school, Catherine heads back to her patrol car. Once in the car, she texts Clare, asking her if she'd tell her if someone was making her do something she didn't want to - showing that she has a theory that Neil (or someone else) is forcing Clare to take Ryan to see Tommy. Clare replies that she would.
Meanwhile, following Joanna's threats to tell the police about his drug dealing, Faisal is looking at flats on a property website. Unable to find anything affordable, he is visibly distressed.
At the Hepworth's house, Joanna is preparing a meal as Rob arrives home. Rob enters the house, walks past his daughters and goes straight to the kitchen. Annoyed by the mess in the kitchen following Joanna's cooking, Rob assaults Joanna and then leaves the house again.
While eating with Poppy and Florence, Joanna is visibly bruised and very upset. Poppy asks why Rob doesn't like her. Joanna struggles to answer, and is troubled by the knowledge that her daughters know about his abusive nature.
